High School Coach Guilty of Sex Crimes
December 9, 2010
Thousand Oaks resident and former Moorpark High School baseball coach Christopher Atkinson plead guilty yesterday to felony sexual intercourse with a child and felony luring a minor.
Atkinson, 24, admitted to having sexual relations with a 15 year-old Moorpark High School student.
The student testified that she met Atkinson at school and began to communicate with him on MySpace and via text messages.
One night, she crawled out of the window of her family trailer and was picked up by Atkinson and driven to his Thousand Oaks apartment.
At the apartment, she claimed Atkinson plied her with liquor until she passed out. She said she awoke later in his bedroom while he was engaging in intercourse with her.
Defense lawyer Bob Bernstein questioned whether the student elected to consume alcohol and showed that the majority of the 164 text messages sent between her and Atkinson were in fact initiated by her.
Atkinson faces up to five years in prison and will become a registered sex offender. His sentencing is scheduled for January 10, 2010.
