Residents Avoid $4 Million Water Usage Fine
Thousand Oaks lowered water consumption by 15 percent over the last year and will likely avoid a $4 Million fine.
The Calleguas Municipal Water District, the local water supplier, was told by the regional Metropolitan Water District in 2009 to cut consumption by 15 percent or be fined. The fine would have been passed onto consumers in the form of higher water bills.
City officials imposed a myriad of city ordinances that limit how often residents can water their lawn, how quickly hose and water leaks must be fixed, and what kind of nozzle must be used to wash cars at home. Washing paved surfaces is prohibited.
All water use restrictions are likely to continue.
Restaurants waiters also stopped automatically bringing water to customers.
The city reports that it was also aided by an unusually wet winter that decreased the amount of water used for yard care.
